Uplifting Quotes and Inspirationals

When I first got to my room, my nurse Tyren had already written some uplifting and inspirational words on my whiteboard. In this vein, my mother and sister decided to add to the warmth and soon, the result of their endeavors is what you see below. I think they are all lovely messages for all who enter the room and find a moment to gaze, may be even unexpectedly, upon it.

Uplifting Quotes and Inspirations from Family and Friends

“This hill, though high, I covet to ascend;
The difficulty will not me offend.
For I perceive the way to life lies here.
Come, pluck up, heart; let’s neither faint nor fear.
Better, though difficult, the right way to go,
Than wrong, though easy, where the end is woe.”

John Bunyan, “The Pilgrim’s Progress”

  1. Sharing some favorite quotes by Steven Charleston (a retired Episcopal bishop and academic. He was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska from 1991 to 1996, and dean of Episcopal Divinity School, from 1999 to 2008)
“I have followed you into places I would not otherwise have gone, down unfamiliar streets into unfamiliar neighborhoods, along the paths of the poor and into lands that speak strangely. I have followed you through hospital corridors into morning gardens and out along the sand carpet shore to watch the sea at sunset. I have followed you into rooms of books and rooms of people and rooms as empty as a clear sky. I have followed you to so many places, for so many years, through so many discoveries, Spirit unseen but ever visible, I have followed you and I always will.”
    -Steven Charleston

“Don’t stop now, not now, not this close to what is about to come. I think there is more to be discovered, more to be learned, more to be revealed. Something out there is calling us on, urging us to see what is next, and next is a promise. Next is trust. Someone out there is on this voyage with us. Someone is beside us. The Spirit helps us, especially if the way ahead seems wild with uncertainty. We sail on, knowing it will not always be easy, but also knowing that if life was easy, creating would only be a formula, not a question. No, don’t stop now. Not now. Not before we run out of wonder.” –

  2. A quote that I think about when faced with hardship. Odysseus wanted to give up many times during his long travels in the sea. Years passed him, he aged, his crew died, his ship battered. It would have been easier perhaps for him to just give up. But in Book 5 he reveals his thoughts on endurance: “…what I want and all my days I pine for is to go back to my house and see my day of homecoming. And if some god batters me far out on the wine-blue water, I will endure it, keeping a stubborn spirit inside me, for already I have suffered much and done much hard work on the waves and in the fighting. So let this adventure follow.” I’ve tried to channel this mindset at varying times in my life – from the trivials to the more pressing.

  3. An interesting way of looking at life/
    “Everything Has A Deep Dream”
    by Rachel Naomi Remen
    I’ve spent many years learning
how to fix life, only to discover
at the end of the day
    that life is not broken.
There is a hidden seed of greater wholeness
    in everyone and everything.
    We serve life best
    when we water it
    and befriend it.
When we listen before we act.
    In befriending life
we do not make things happen
    according to our own design.
We uncover something that is already happening
in us and around us and
    create conditions that enable it.
Everything is moving toward its place of wholeness
    always struggling against odds.
Everything has a deep dream of itself and its fulfillment.

  4. “The Journey”
    By Mary Oliver

    One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
    though the voices around you
    kept shouting
    their bad advice —
    though the whole house
    began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
    at your ankles.
    “Mend my life!”
    each voice cried.
    But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
    though the wind pried
    with its stiff fingers
    at the very foundations,
    though their melancholy
    was terrible.
    It was already late
    enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
    branches and stones.
    But little by little,
as you left their voice behind,
    the stars began to burn
    through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
    which you slowly
    recognized as your own,
    that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
    into the world,
    determined to do
the only thing you could do —
    determined to save
the only life that you could save.
