When I first got to my room, my nurse Tyren had already written some uplifting and inspirational words on my whiteboard. A quote that I think about when faced with hardship. Odysseus wanted to give up many times during his long travels in the sea. Years passed him, he aged, his crew died, his ship battered. It would have been easier perhaps for him to just give up. But in Book 5 he reveals his thoughts on endurance: “…what I want and all my days I pine for is to go back to my house and see my day of homecoming. And if some god batters me far out on the wine-blue water, I will endure it, keeping a stubborn spirit inside me, for already I have suffered much and done much hard work on the waves and in the fighting. So let this adventure follow.” I’ve tried to channel this mindset at varying times in my life – from the trivials to the more pressing.
